Netflix Blade Runner 2049 Movie Poster & Modules

Overview

Blade Runner 2049, a truly iconic masterpiece of our contemporary era. When it comes to the world of movies, a common pitfall lies in the repetition of character-focused layouts and mundane color choices seen in posters and designs, causing them to fade into a sea of sameness. This project provides a solution to seamlessly adapt its malleable design into diverse modules across various formats within Netflix.

Exploration & Design

In this mood board, the main focus lies in the seamless integration of lines and objects within a subject, resulting in a visually striking poster that exudes energy and vibrancy. To achieve this effect, the color palette predominantly revolves around shades of turquoise and magenta, which infuse the entire composition with a nocturnal ambience evoking the essence of nightlife and excitement.

During the thumbnail stage, my primary focus gravitated towards the two characters that exude iconic presence in the movie: Agent K and Joi. With the movie being predominantly a detective thriller rather than solely centered on sensuality, I made a deliberate choice to emphasize a brooding pose for the main protagonist, prioritizing this over directing attention towards Joi.

In order to adapt the overall design to different formats and backgrounds, I crafted the typography for longer and square formats. Also adjusting the word marks to suit both light and dark backgrounds, ensuring a cohesive visual experience across various media.

Final Illustration

In the initial stages, the sketch underwent refinement to more accurately capture the likeness of Ryan Gosling, the actor portraying Agent K. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop facilitated the creation of sleek and stylized shapes, lending a crisp and vectorized appearance to the artwork. The inclusion of a synthwave icon in the background not only complements the futuristic theme, but also serves to highlight the significance of the movie's soundtrack.

The final design incorporates a captivating effect by offsetting the color profiles of red, green, and blue. This technique conjures the impression of an aged television powering on and adds a nostalgic touch to the overall composition. Additionally, subtle yet purposeful lines slyly traverse the entire image, effectively deepening the VHS movie ambiance, evoking reminiscent vibes from the original Blade Runner movie that released in the 1980s.

Deliverables

The deliverables for this project encompassed various elements, which consisted of a playback image, a billboard site, a ROAR file, an eye-catching poster image intended for Netflix's home screen, as well as a movie poster.

Billboard Site

Playback

In order to enhance the poster, the typography was modified to echo the color scheme of the synthwave logo in the background. This adjustment forms a stronger bond between the two elements. Notably, the Blade Runner 2049 image stands out as the most vibrant and attention-grabbing component, surpassing the usual generic movie poster styles commonly found with high contrast.

In this instance, the ROAR file stands shoulder to shoulder with its cinematic counterparts, despite its size. To enhance the prominence of the movie's typography, a subtle, dark gradient has been applied towards the lower edge of the image.

In the final movie poster design, the names of the actors, directors, producers, and writers, are written in the standard typeface of most movie posters, paying homage to their invaluable contributions. In order to give credit to the studios and companies who played a crucial role in the making of this movie, their logos have been placed at the bottom. Lastly, a Photoshop mock-up was created to show how this would be displayed in public.
